Geotechnical Construction Manager

Location: San Jose, CA. Salary: Competitive and depending on qualifications.

Cal Engineering & Geology’s San Jose office is looking for a seasoned Geotechnical Construction Manager or Engineering Inspector to join our team. The right person will serve as a geoCM to help service geotechnical-focused infrastructure construction projects in the Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties. The successful candidate’s first assignment will be to join a construction management team at a field site on a tunnel project near Morgan Hill, CA. The candidate will also play a major role in interfacing with clients, contractors, and testing and inspection personnel. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and a proven track record in resolving construction problems. This is an opportunity to be part of an expanding service area for an established geotechnical and civil engineering design and consulting firm focused on public infrastructure renewal and improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead geoCM or as specialty geotechnical engineering inspector on geotechnically-focused public infrastructure projects for water and flood control infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Provide technical input and contractual advice to clients on construction projects involving infrastructure, grading, underground, foundation, or restoration works.
  • Assist clients in resolving construction problems and develop approaches to avoid, address, and evaluate contractor claims.
  • Collaborate with third-party design consultants to develop pragmatic solutions for construction challenges.
  • Direct and coordinate activities of inspectors and other construction management field staff to track Contractor progress on schedule and on budget.
  • Review Contractor submittals, RFI’s, change requests, and correspondence and provide recommendations and guidance to clients.
  • Document construction progress and impact on adjacent facilities using cloud-based advanced monitoring systems.
  • Prepare memoranda related to construction and draft correspondence on behalf of the client.
  • Manage and implement CE&G’s geoCM document control system to monitor and report on construction milestones and progress.

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil/Geotechnical, Construction Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Construction Management.
  • Minimum 10+ years related experience in technical and project management roles noted.
  • Construction management experience with owners, third-party design consultants, and contractors is required.
  • Willingness to implement and use innovative cloud-based advanced monitoring and document control systems.
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical design and construction, including underground and in-water construction.
  • Experience coordinating with regulatory agencies and consultants regarding environmental monitoring and reporting.
  • Experience with commercial and administrative aspects of construction management is required.
  • Strong communication (both oral and written), analytical and leadership skills.
  • Professional Engineering registration (PE) or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) is preferred.
  • Project management, staff management, and client interaction experience commensurate with level of experience.
  • Physical ability to walk around construction sites with unlevel ground, carry up to 30 lbs., and climb ladders.
  • Knowledge of construction safety and OSHA requirements.
  • California driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
  • Willingness to support projects within Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Alameda Counties.

Internship Opportunities

Based in our San Jose, Hayward or Walnut Creek Office

Cal Engineering & Geology is currently seeking a Project Civil Engineer to support project teams providing Design services. Projects include transportation, bridges, flood control, water and wastewater, landslide repairs, and retaining walls.

Responsibilities

  • Completes tasks assigned by the Project Directors, Managers, or Engineers.
  • Is sensitive to project quality, schedule, and budgets, and reports concerns to the Project Manager.
  • Prepare design plans, specifications, and estimates in conformance with Caltrans guidelines and standards as directed by Project Managers.
  • Use engineering judgment to perform duties.
  • Knows when to ask questions, seek assistance or perform independent research.
  • Perform engineering calculations, clearly documenting methodology used and checks his/her work.
  • Effectively interacts with clients, sub-consultants, and peers through written and oral communication.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Computer skills including AutoCAD Civil 3D (alignments, profiles, sections, corridors), MicroStation, Word, Excel
  • Written and oral communication skills sufficient to prepare project documentation and correspondence, interact effectively with other team members, occasionally interface with clients, and deliver client, public, or internal team presentations on occasion.
  • Valid California driver’s license
